Arctic Biodiversity Through the Lens”, a photography exhibit displaying the beauty of the Arctic, will open in Akureyri, Iceland, Friday July 31 at the Hof Cultural building at 14:00.

The exhibition consists of photographs from across the Arctic and displays the winning images from a photography competition held by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group of the Arctic Council.

The exhibit also displays key findings from the Arctic Biodiversity Assessment, the first overall assessment of Arctic biodiversity. Over 250 scientists across the world participated in the generation of the assessment. The exhibit is held in cooperation with a strong network of institutions and companies located in Akureyri, which focus on Arctic issues.

  • Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson, Mayor of Akureyri, will open the exhibit
  • Embla Eir Oddsdóttir, Director of the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network, will say a few words about the active Arctic network operating in Akureyri
  • Kári Fannar Lárusson, Program Officer at CAFF, will say a few words CAFF, the photography comptition and the story behind selected images.  

 


 

Photo: Arnar Bergur GudjonssonLjósmyndasýningin „Lífríki Norðurslóða í gegnum linsuna“ verður opnuð næstkomandi föstudag 31. júlí fyrir utan Menningarhúsið Hof kl 14:00. Ljósmyndasýningin samanstendur af myndum víðsvegar frá norðurslóðum og sýnir vinningsmyndir úr ljósmyndakeppni sem CAFF skrifstofan á Íslandi, vinnuhópur Norðurskautsráðsins, hefur staðið fyrir síðastliðið ár.

Á sýningunni má einnig sjá megin niðurstöður úr skýrslu er nefnist Lífríki Norðurslóða (Arctic Biodviersity Assessment) sem er fyrsta heildstæða mat á lífríki norðurslóða. Að skýrslunni koma yfir 250 vísindamenn víðsvegar að en starfinu var stýrt frá Akureyri.

Opnun sýningarinnar er í samstarfi við öflugan kjarna stofnana og fyrirtækja sem koma að norðurslóðamálum á Akureyri auk þess sem ljósmyndakeppnin sjálf naut stuðnings fjölda aðila sem láta sig málið varða.

  • Kári Fannar Lárusson, verkefnastjóri hjá CAFF, mun segja nokkur orð um starfsemi CAFF, hversvegna ráðist var í að halda ljósmyndakeppni um norðurslóðir og fjalla um söguna á bakvið valdar myndir.

 


Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF)

CAFF is the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council and consists of National Representatives assigned by each of the eight Arctic Council Member States, representatives of Indigenous Peoples' organizations that are Permanent Participants to the Council, and Arctic Council observer countries and organizations. CAFF’s mandate is to address the conservation of Arctic biodiversity, and to communicate its findings to the governments and residents of the Arctic, helping to promote practices which ensure the sustainability of the Arctic’s living resources. Arctic Council

The Arctic Council is a high level intergovernmental forum to provide a means for promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States, with the involvement of the Arctic Indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.  Arctic Council Member States are Canada, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russian Federation, Sweden, and the United States of America.
